Virginia's Warbler

Leiothlypis virginiae (Baird, SF, 1860)

Parulidae — New World Warblers

Virginia's Warbler, Leiothlypis virginiae, is a New World warbler that breeds in the south-western USA and spends the non-breeding season in Mexico. Its name honours Virginia Anderson, rather than the American state of Virginia. The bird was first found at Fort Burgwin, New Mexico, in 1858, and was formally described in 1860 by Spencer Fullerton Baird. Baird followed the discoverer’s wish by giving Virginia to both the common and scientific names. Its breeding range extends east only to Texas, with a regular presence in the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico.
