Visayan Hornbill

Penelopides affinis

The Visayan Hornbill, scientifically known as Penelopides affinis, is a medium-sized bird belonging to the hornbill family. It is characterized by its distinctive large, downward-curved bill and a prominent casque on top of the bill. These birds are primarily found in the Philippines, specifically in the islands of Negros, Panay, and Guimaras. They inhabit lowland forests and forest edges, where they forage for fruits, insects, and small animals. The Visayan Hornbill plays a vital role in seed dispersal and forest regeneration. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and hunting, the population of these birds is declining, and they are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
