Visayan Hornbill

Penelopides samarensis

The Visayan Hornbill, scientifically known as Penelopides samarensis, is a medium-sized bird species belonging to the hornbill family. It is characterized by its large, curved bill and prominent casque on top of the bill. The species is predominantly black with white underparts and a colorful casque. Visayan Hornbills are known for their distinctive call, which can be heard in the forested areas of the Visayan islands in the Philippines. They primarily feed on fruits, insects, and small animals, and play a vital role in seed dispersal within their habitat. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the Visayan Hornbill is classified as Endangered by the IUCN.
