Von Schrenck's Bittern, Botaurus eurhythmus, is a heron relative that breeds in south-east Siberia, the Korean Peninsula, Japan and eastern China, and spends the non-breeding season from the Malay Peninsula to the Greater Sundas, Sulawesi and the Philippines. It was first described by Swinhoe in 1873. The species is a small bittern, and the male is chestnut above with buff underparts and wing coverts. Females and young birds are chestnut overall, with white markings above and streaking below. In flight, the black wings and tail are visible.
