Water Rail

Rallus aquaticus

The Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) is a secretive bird species found in wetland habitats across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It is characterized by its long, red bill, brown and black mottled plumage, and short tail. This elusive bird is known for its loud, pig-like squealing call, which is often heard in the early morning or at dusk. Water Rails are skilled swimmers and can often be found foraging for invertebrates and small fish in dense vegetation along the edges of marshes, reedbeds, and wet meadows. Due to their secretive nature, they are often difficult to spot despite being relatively common in suitable habitats.
