Gallicrex cinerea
The Watercock (Gallicrex cinerea) is a medium-sized bird found in wetlands and marshes across South and Southeast Asia. It is known for its secretive nature and is often heard rather than seen. The Watercock has a distinctive call that resembles the sound of a pig squealing. It has a mottled brown plumage that provides excellent camouflage in its marshy habitat. These birds are skilled swimmers and are often found wading in shallow water in search of food, which mainly consists of insects, small fish, and aquatic plants. The Watercock is known for its elaborate courtship displays, which involve loud calls and aerial acrobatics.
