Wedge-tailed Hillstar

Oreotrochilus adela (d'Orbigny, 1838)

Trochilidae — Hummingbirds

Wedge-tailed Hillstar, Oreotrochilus adela, is a hummingbird of the Andes in south-western Bolivia and extreme north-western Argentina. It occurs from central Bolivia south to Jujuy Province, where it lives in semi-arid to seasonally humid country below the puna grasslands. It is usually seen among shrubs, in gullies and basins with Polylepis trees, and in altered habitat if Dodonaea bushes, taller scrub and columnar cacti are still present. Its bill is medium-length, slightly downcurved and black, and the tail is graduated, with blue-black feathers and cinnamon inner webs on all but the central pair.
