Welcome Swallow

Hirundo neoxena

The Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena) is a small passerine bird native to Australia and nearby islands. It is known for its distinctive deeply forked tail and graceful, acrobatic flight. These agile birds are often seen darting and swooping over open areas, catching insects on the wing. Welcome Swallows are highly social, often nesting in colonies and frequently found near water. Their cup-shaped nests are constructed from mud and grass, often placed in sheltered locations such as under bridges or eaves. These birds are known for their cheerful twittering calls and are a familiar sight in many parts of Australia.

Habitat: Open areas near water, including wetlands, grasslands, and urban areas.
