Western Flycatcher, Empidonax difficilis, breeds across western Canada and the western USA, extending south into Mexico, and spends the non-breeding season in western Mexico. It is a passerine in the tyrant flycatcher family. In its breeding areas it is tied to forests and wooded places, especially where water runs nearby. It is a difficult bird to separate from other Empidonax flycatchers, but it can be identified by its teardrop-shaped white eye ring, white wing bars, small bill and short tail. Its range and breeding habitat are among the best clues for finding it.
