Western Sandpiper

Calidris mauri

The Western Sandpiper is a small shorebird that breeds in the tundra of western Alaska and migrates along the Pacific coast to wintering grounds in South America. During migration, it can be found in large flocks on mudflats and coastal marshes. This species has a distinctive long, slightly drooping bill and is known for its frenetic feeding behavior, rapidly probing the mud for invertebrates. The Western Sandpiper is a long-distance migrant, facing threats from habitat loss and degradation along its migration route.
