Western Screech Owl

Megascops kennicottii

The Western Screech Owl (Megascops kennicottii) is a small, stocky owl found in western North America. It has a mottled brown and gray plumage, with prominent ear tufts and bright yellow eyes. These nocturnal hunters are skilled at camouflaging themselves against tree bark and are known for their distinctive trilling call. Western Screech Owls primarily inhabit woodlands, forests, and riparian areas, where they nest in tree cavities or abandoned nests. They feed on small mammals, birds, and insects. Despite their adaptability to human-altered landscapes, habitat loss and urbanization pose threats to their populations.
