Western Wood-Pewee

Contopus pallidus

The Western Wood-Pewee is a small, insect-eating bird found in western North America. It has a grayish-olive upper body, with a pale throat and belly. This species is known for its distinctive call, a plaintive 'pee-a-wee' often heard in open woodlands and forest edges. Western Wood-Pewees primarily feed on flying insects, catching them in mid-air with agile aerial maneuvers. They build cup-shaped nests in trees and shrubs, often near water sources. Although not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and climate change may pose future challenges for this species.
