Western Woodhaunter

Automolus virgatus (Lawrence, 1867)

Western Woodhaunter, Automolus virgatus, is a bird of humid forest and woodland in Middle America and South America, from southeastern Nicaragua to western Ecuador, with records also in Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia. It belongs to the Furnariidae family and was described by Lawrence in 1867. It is a resident throughout its range. The species is found in foothills and the lower montane zone, usually below 1,100 m, though it reaches about 1,500 m in some places. Its taxonomy has been unsettled, and four subspecies are recognised.
