Westland petrel

Procellaria conspicillata

The Westland petrel, also known as the Westland black petrel, is a seabird endemic to New Zealand. It is a medium-sized petrel with predominantly dark plumage and a distinctive white patch on the underwings. These birds are known for their remarkable nocturnal flights over the ocean, where they forage for fish and squid. They breed in colonies on steep, forested slopes, and their nesting sites are threatened by introduced predators such as rats and possums. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their breeding grounds and reduce the impact of invasive species.
