White-backed Thrush, Turdus kessleri, breeds in western China and south-east Tibet in the Oriental Region. It is a thrush in the family Turdidae, first described by Przevalski in 1876. Its breeding sites are alpine scrub on rocky ground at 3600–4500 metres. Outside the breeding season it moves downslope, reaching 2100 metres and, rarely, 1500 metres. The species is also recorded as a scarce winter visitor in Bhutan, north-eastern India and eastern Nepal. It is a resident or short-distance altitudinal migrant, and it gathers in flocks, especially in winter and also on the breeding grounds.
