White-breasted Mesite

Lophotibis cristata

The White-breasted Mesite (Lophotibis cristata) is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird found in the dry forests and scrublands of western Madagascar. It is characterized by its distinctive white breast and belly, contrasting with the dark plumage on its back and wings. This species is known for its secretive nature, often foraging on the forest floor for insects, seeds, and small invertebrates. The White-breasted Mesite is a monogamous bird, forming long-term pair bonds and nesting in dense vegetation. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and hunting pressure, the population of this species is declining, and it is currently classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
