White-eared Night Heron

Carterornis leucotis

The White-eared Night Heron is a medium-sized heron found in the wetlands and marshes of Southeast Asia. It has a distinctive appearance with a black crown, white face, and a white patch behind the eye, giving it its name. The rest of its plumage is predominantly gray with subtle streaks. This species is primarily nocturnal, feeding on fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates under the cover of darkness. Its secretive nature and preference for dense vegetation make it a challenging bird to observe in the wild.
