White-naped Woodpecker, Chrysocolaptes festivus, breeds in India and Sri Lanka in the Oriental Region, where it is a widespread but scarce breeder. It is linked with open forest and scrub that still hold some trees. A notable feature is its nesting in a tree hole, where it lays one or two white eggs. The species was described by Boddaert in 1783. It belongs to the woodpecker family and has the typical woodpecker form, with a straight pointed bill, a stiff tail for support on trunks, zygodactyl feet, and a long tongue used to take insects.
