Pseudelaenia leucospodia
The White-spotted Woodpecker (Pseudelaenia leucospodia) is a medium-sized woodpecker found in the forests and woodlands of South America. It has a distinctive black and white plumage, with a white-spotted pattern on the wings and back. This species is known for its drumming behavior, using its bill to create rhythmic patterns on trees to communicate and establish territory. White-spotted Woodpeckers primarily feed on insects and larvae found in tree bark, using their strong bills to excavate and capture prey. They are often observed in pairs or small family groups, and their presence can be detected by their distinctive calls echoing through the forest. Despite facing habitat loss and fragmentation, the White-spotted Woodpecker is currently considered to be of Least Concern by the IUCN.
