White-tailed Hawk, Geranoaetus albicaudatus, is a hawk of open and semi-open country from south-west USA through Middle America to central Argentina. It also occurs on several Caribbean islands. It favours dry places with few trees and is usually found below 2,000 ft. The species is a large, stocky bird, and adults show grey upperparts, white underparts and rump, a white tail with a narrow black band near the tip, and a rusty shoulder patch when perched. Young birds are darker and lack the shoulder patch.
