White-throated Dipper

Cinclus schulzii

The White-throated Dipper (Cinclus schulzii) is a small, stout bird found in fast-flowing streams and rivers of the Alps. It has a distinctive white throat and chestnut-brown plumage, with a short tail and strong legs adapted for diving and foraging underwater. This species is known for its unique behavior of bobbing and dipping on rocks at the water's edge, and it is an excellent swimmer and diver. The White-throated Dipper feeds on aquatic invertebrates and small fish, using its sharp bill to catch prey in the water. It builds its cup-shaped nest near waterfalls or rapids, and is a year-round resident in its range.
