White-winged Cliff Chat

Monticola semirufus (Rüppell, 1837)

Muscicapidae — Chats, Old World Flycatchers

White-winged Cliff Chat, Monticola semirufus, breeds in montane Eritrea and Ethiopia and belongs to the Muscicapidae, the chats and Old World flycatchers. It is a passerine of rocky wooded gorges, boulder-strewn places and road cuttings in the Ethiopian Highlands. The species was once included in Thamnolaea, but a molecular study published in 2010 led to its transfer to Monticola. In flight, both sexes show clear white on the secondaries, and the white marks on the primaries are a key feature for identifying it.
