Icthyophaga sanfordi
The White-winged Woodpecker (Icthyophaga sanfordi) is a striking bird found in the forests of Southeast Asia. It is known for its distinctive black and white plumage, with a bright red crest on the head. This woodpecker is a medium-sized species, measuring around 25-30 centimeters in length. It is often observed foraging for insects and larvae in the trunks and branches of trees, using its strong bill and long tongue to extract prey. The White-winged Woodpecker is primarily found in lowland and montane forests, where it nests in tree cavities. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and deforestation, its conservation status is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
