Whyte's Francolin

Scleroptila whytei

Whyte's Francolin is a medium-sized bird native to the highlands of eastern Africa. It has a distinctive appearance with a mottled brown plumage, white-spotted flanks, and a reddish bill. These birds are primarily ground-dwellers, foraging for seeds, insects, and small invertebrates in the grassy and shrubby areas of their habitat. They are known for their distinctive calls, often heard at dawn and dusk. Whyte's Francolins are typically found in montane forests, grasslands, and cultivated areas. While they are not currently considered to be at immediate risk, habitat loss and hunting pose potential threats to their populations.
