Wild Turkey

Meleagris gallopavo

The Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is a large bird native to North America. It is known for its distinctive fan-shaped tail and iridescent plumage. Adult males, known as toms, have a bare, wattle-covered head and a throat covered in bristles. They are known for their gobbling call during the breeding season. Wild Turkeys inhabit a variety of forested and open habitats, including woodlands, grasslands, and swamps. They are omnivorous, feeding on a diet of seeds, fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. Due to habitat loss and hunting, Wild Turkey populations declined in the past, but conservation efforts have led to their recovery in many areas.
