Wing-barred Seedeater

Sporophila americana (Gmelin, JF, 1789)

Wing-barred Seedeater, Sporophila americana, is a passerine of northern and western Amazonia in South America. It occurs in open and semi-open grassy places with shrubs, and is usually seen in pairs or small flocks. The adult male has a heavy black bill, black upperparts, two white wing-bars, and white underparts marked by a broad black collar and some dark mottling on the upper flanks. The female is much duller, with a brownish bill, buffy-olive upperparts and pale olive-ochre underparts. Juveniles are like the female.
