Wood Snipe, Gallinago nemoricola, is a bird of the western Himalayas from Himachal Pradesh east to eastern China, with wintering birds moving to lower-level wetlands and woodland and appearing rarely in the Indian Peninsula and north-east South-East Asia. It is a snipe of the Charadriiformes and the sandpiper family. In the breeding season it uses alpine meadows and scrub in subtropical Asian mountains. Its most notable feature is its dark plumage and short, broad-based bill. It was described by Hodgson in 1836.
