Hylocichla mustelina
The Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina) is a medium-sized songbird known for its flute-like, ethereal song that echoes through the eastern forests of North America. This species has a rich, reddish-brown upper plumage, with bold black spots on its white underparts. It has a distinctive white eye ring and a spotted breast. Wood Thrushes are known for their shy and secretive nature, often foraging on the forest floor for insects and small invertebrates. They breed in mature deciduous and mixed forests and migrate to Central America for the winter. Unfortunately, their populations are declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation.
