Yellow-billed Magpie

Pica nuttallii (Audubon, 1837)

Yellow-billed Magpie, Pica nuttallii, breeds in California, where it is confined to the Central Valley and the nearby chaparral hills and mountains. It is a corvid of groves beside rivers and open ground, and it also uses vacant urban plots and other weedy sites. The bird is recognised by its yellow bill and the small yellow patch of bare skin around the eye. It is a permanent resident and usually stays close to its breeding area. It was named by Audubon in 1837, and its scientific name honours Thomas Nuttall.
