Yellow-eared Woodpecker

Veniliornis maculifrons

The Yellow-eared Woodpecker (Veniliornis maculifrons) is a small woodpecker found in the Andean cloud forests of South America. It has distinctive yellow ear coverts and a black and white barred back. This species forages for insects and larvae by pecking and probing into tree bark. It also feeds on fruits and seeds. The Yellow-eared Woodpecker excavates nest holes in dead trees and is known for its drumming behavior during the breeding season. Although not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and degradation are potential threats to its population.
