Zone-tailed Hawk

Buteo albonotatus

The Zone-tailed Hawk is a large, broad-winged raptor found in the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America. It is often mistaken for the Turkey Vulture due to its similar plumage and behavior of soaring in wide circles. This species is known for its distinctive black and white banded tail, which is thought to mimic the appearance of the Turkey Vulture. Zone-tailed Hawks are skilled hunters, preying on small mammals, reptiles, and birds. They prefer open woodlands, canyons, and river valleys, where they can use their agility and speed to catch prey. Despite being relatively common in its range, the Zone-tailed Hawk faces threats from habitat loss and persecution.
