A small-group nine-day journey through Bolivia's Beni region, linking Riberalta, Madidi forest and Trinidad for an estimated 275-350 species.
About this tour
This small-group nine-day tour explores northern Bolivia's Beni region through three distinct field bases. An air journey links La Paz with Riberalta, where roadside, savanna, cerrado and rainforest birding centers on the localized Masked Antpitta. The route then makes the long overland journey south to Sadiri Lodge within Madidi National Park.
Three complete field days at Sadiri provide time in intact forest, using easier lower trails as well as more demanding routes over mountain ridges. A second long transfer reaches Trinidad, with gallery-forest birding included if time allows. The final morning is directed toward Blue-throated Macaw south of the city before an afternoon flight to Santa Cruz. The official diversity estimate is 275-350 species, not a guaranteed result.
The program is rated moderate, but intensity can be adjusted to the group. It includes a transfer of about ten hours to Sadiri and a later drive of roughly six and a half hours to Trinidad. June through November is the listed period, with the drier months generally offering more reliable road access. Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in La Paz
Reach La Paz, with time to prepare for the upcoming field itinerary. Stay overnight at a hotel in La Paz.
Day 2
Morning flight to Riberalta
Open the field day early and take a flight to Riberalta. Continue for the rest of the daylight with birdwatching in that area, targeting Masked Antpitta. Accommodation for the night is at a hotel in Riberalta.
Day 3
Birding at Riberalta
Spend the full day birdwatching at Riberalta. The itinerary uses a hotel in Riberalta for the overnight.
Day 4
Birding at transfer to Sadiri Lodge (10 hours)
Use the full day for the transfer to Sadiri Lodge (10 hours). The day finishes with accommodation at Sadiri Lodge.
Day 5
Birding at Sadiri Lodge
Spend the full day birdwatching at Sadiri Lodge. Overnight at Sadiri Lodge.
Day 6
Birding at Sadiri Lodge
Allow a full day to work the habitats at Sadiri Lodge. The planned overnight is at Sadiri Lodge.
Day 7
Birding at Sadiri Lodge
Keep the complete field day centered on Sadiri Lodge. Tonight's stay is at Sadiri Lodge.
Day 8
Long transfer to Trinidad (about 6½
Long travel to Trinidad (about 6½ hours). Spend field time birdwatching in the gallery forest outside Trinidad as time permits. The itinerary uses a hotel in Trinidad for the overnight.
Day 9
Birding south of Trinidad for Blue-throated
In the morning, continue birdwatching south of Trinidad for Blue-throated Macaw. The afternoon brings time to take a flight to Santa Cruz. The tour concludes there.
