About this tour

This small-group four-day extension leaves Santa Cruz for Camiri, a foothill base on the edge of Bolivia's Chaco lowlands. After the roughly four-hour transfer, the first field session takes place around town. A full day then explores south toward the Argentine border, followed by another day in dry foothill woodland north of Camiri.

The Chaco introduces a bird community associated with spiny scrub, thorn forest, dry savanna and scattered wet areas. Many of these regional specialties are absent from the immediate Santa Cruz area. The final morning allows further birding near Camiri before the return journey to Santa Cruz. The official estimate is 125-150 species, subject to season and field conditions.

The route is rated easy, with much of the birding conducted from relatively flat roadsides; working birds within dense dry gallery forest can still be challenging. June through September is the listed period. Days are generally drier from April to October, while nights can be considerably cooler.
