A private 6-day northern Colombia birding journey from the Caribbean Coast into the Santa Marta Mountains, focused on endemic birds across dry forest, wetlands and subtropical forest.
About this tour
Northern Colombia brings together Caribbean dry forest, mangroves and the isolated Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This private route travels from Barranquilla through Salamanca National Park, Los Flamencos Sanctuary and Minca before climbing into the Santa Marta Mountains.
The sharp elevation change supports very different bird communities. Coastal stops focus on dry-country, wetland and mangrove species, while the mountain section searches for birds restricted to the Sierra Nevada. Forest roads, reserve trails and lodge feeders allow the group to work across several elevations without long walks on most days, although the ascent includes rough roads.
The itinerary ends by descending toward Minca, with onward travel arranged through Santa Marta, Cartagena or Bogota according to the private plan. Itinerary
Day 0
Arrive to Barranquilla from Bogotá
Meet the guide in Bogota, review the programme and take the evening flight to Barranquilla. The first overnight is near sea level in Barranquilla, ready for an early start along the Caribbean route.
Day 1
Barranquilla - Salamanca NP - Palomino
Start on the outskirts of Barranquilla, then continue east toward Salamanca National Park. Roadside dry habitat and the park’s mangroves provide contrasting searches for regional endemics, wetland birds and coastal specialties. Finish near Palomino or Riohacha for the night.
Day 2
Los Flamencos Sanctuary
Travel early to Camarones and explore the dry scrub around Los Flamencos Sanctuary. Birding concentrates on Guajira specialties and wetlands used by American Flamingos and other waterbirds. A second night is spent in the Palomino or Riohacha area.
Day 3
Las Gaviotas road - Minca
Bird tropical dry forest along Las Gaviotas Road before turning toward the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The afternoon explores foothill habitat around Minca, adding a new elevation and forest community to the route. Overnight in Minca at approximately 650 meters.
Day 4
Minca - El Dorado
Climb from Minca toward the higher Santa Marta forests, stopping at suitable elevations for the first endemic and near-endemic mountain birds. After lunch, continue birding around the lodge and its feeders, with a possible dusk search when conditions cooperate. Overnight around 1,700 meters.
Day 5
Cuchilla de San Lorenzo, El Dorado reserve
Make an early ascent to Cuchilla de San Lorenzo for the high-elevation Santa Marta endemics. The route combines mountain forest and open viewpoints before returning to bird areas around and below the reserve in the afternoon. Spend a second night at the mountain lodge.
Day 6
Mountain House -Minca
Descend through forest below the lodge toward Minca, using the morning for important species not encountered on the ascent. After lunch, continue in tropical dry forest below town if timing permits. Onward arrangements may lead to Santa Marta, Cartagena or Bogota.
