This outing explores Guillermo Piñeres Botanical Garden through its birds as well as its plants. Near Turbaco, the garden combines a collection of more than 300 plant species with native forest that provides a refuge for wildlife in the Cartagena region. Tropical dry-forest plants stand alongside ornamental species from other tropical areas, making the changing vegetation part of the birding experience.
The day begins before the garden opens. After pickup in or near Cartagena’s walled city, Maicol leads an initial birding walk outside the grounds, then moves into the garden for a longer search along its trails. This sequence gives the morning two distinct settings and leaves time to pause for water or refreshments at the cafeteria.
The example schedule starts with a 6:00 a.m. pickup, reaches the area after roughly 40 minutes, and returns to Cartagena around 12:30 p.m. The birding visit is described as approximately five hours, with road travel additional. Guidance is available in Spanish and English, and the group can range from one to ten guests.
Birds share the grounds with howler monkeys, frogs and sloths, which may be encountered during the walk. The focus remains on observing birds in the garden and forest. Water and snacks are provided in the proposed outing; breakfast is excluded.

Start from Cartagena in the early morning and bird outside the botanical garden before opening. Enter the grounds for the main trail walk, taking a short refreshment break as needed. Leave for the return transfer after the morning’s birding.
