At Fundación Loros in Villanueva, the birding landscape ranges from scrub and transitional woodland to primary forest. More than 200 species have been recorded in the area, and Maicol’s outing uses trails and forest edges to look for both resident birds and seasonal visitors. A productive morning may yield 80 species or more, although the result depends on conditions and bird activity.
The visit also introduces the foundation’s conservation work. Some parrots and macaws in the landscape are part of rehabilitation and release efforts, including birds now flying in established free-ranging flocks. Their presence should be understood in that conservation context, alongside the wild resident and migratory birds sought on the walk.
The morning begins with a transfer from the Cartagena pickup area, usually in or near the walled city. The sample program leaves at 5:10 a.m. and allows about an hour to reach the reserve. Fruit, coffee, water and a traditional breakfast accompany an introduction to the conservation project before the main birding exploration.
Maicol guides in Spanish and English, adapting the bird search to experienced observers or guests seeking an introduction to birdwatching. The reserve experience is approximately six hours; travel extends the day, with the example program returning around 1:30 p.m. Groups of one to ten can be arranged, and transportation depends on the number of guests.

Fundación Loros birding outing
Drive from Cartagena to Fundación Loros early in the day. Begin with refreshments and an introduction to the foundation’s work, then explore forest trails and edge habitats for resident and migratory birds. Return to Cartagena after the morning visit.
