Small-Group Costa Rica Mega Birding Tour
A small-group 20-day Costa Rica birding circuit spanning both slopes and the far north, with an estimated 550-625 species across a wide habitat range.
About this tour
This small-group 20-day itinerary is the most extensive Costa Rica route in the Exotic Birding program. It crosses the Pacific and Caribbean slopes, running from southern lowland forest near the Panama side of the country to Caño Negro near Nicaragua. The opening section covers Ceiba-Cascajal Road, the Tarcoles River, Carara National Park and the Osa Peninsula, followed by La Gamba Road and Wilson Botanical Gardens.
The middle of the journey climbs through Cerro de la Muerte to San Gerardo de Dota for highland birding and a search for Resplendent Quetzal. Reserva El Copal, Hotel Quelitales, Braulio Carrillo and La Selva then introduce tanager, hummingbird and Caribbean forest sites. Farther north, the itinerary adds Heliconias Lodge, Tapir Valley Nature Reserve, Rio Celeste and boat-based birding around Caño Negro and the Rio Frio. Arenal, Selvatura, Monteverde Cloud Forest and La Ensenada complete the circuit.
The published estimate is 550-625 species rather than a guaranteed count. The program is rated moderate, with mostly roadside and relatively level trail birding, some steeper sections around Arenal and Monteverde, and one high-altitude visit near 3,450 meters at Cerro de la Muerte. January to March is the preferred season, and accommodation is described as good to excellent. Send an inquiry through BirdWatch to discuss suitable dates, availability and final pricing.
