A small-group four-day coastal Ecuador extension through mangroves, arid scrub and Ayampe woodland, focused on Esmeraldas Woodstar and Tumbesian specialties.
About this tour
This small-group four-day extension explores the dry southwest of Ecuador between Guayaquil and the Pacific coast. After arrival from the main southern Ecuador tour, the route begins with mangrove birding near Guayaquil and a search for Rufous-necked Rail. It then continues west and north toward Ayampe, passing through the arid landscapes of the Santa Elena Peninsula.
A full day is devoted to the Ayampe area, with the final morning available for Ayampe or Machalilla before returning to Guayaquil. Esmeraldas Woodstar is the main seasonal focus, supported by Tumbesian near-endemics and other birds of coastal woodland, scrub, saltpan and beach habitats. The published estimate is 100-150 species, and the principal target is most relevant during its breeding season rather than guaranteed.
The itinerary is rated easy and mainly uses roadsides and nearly level forest paths. An optional river trail may require several crossings, for which rubber boots can be useful. Set out early to birdwatch in mangroves near Guayaquil for Rufous-necked Rail. Continue the route to Ayampe near Pacific coast. The itinerary uses a hotel near reserve for the overnight.
Devote the full day to birdwatching at Ayampe Area. Accommodation for the night is at a hotel in Ayampe.
In the morning, visit Ayampe area or Machalilla. The afternoon brings time to continue to Guayaquil. The tour concludes here. Take the overnight flight home.
