Classic North India Birds & Wildlife with Pilibhit Tiger Reserve
A 15-day North India circuit combining major wetlands, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, the Taj Mahal and Himalayan forest birding around Pangot and Sattal.
About this tour
This 15-day North India itinerary brings together wetlands, river wildlife, grassland, tiger-reserve safaris and Himalayan forest birding. It adapts the established Classic North India route by adding Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, a less frequently visited area with both forest and grassland birds as well as several sought-after mammals.
The journey begins in Delhi, with local birding possible before the route continues through Sultanpur to Keoladeo National Park at Bharatpur. Keoladeo, a former hunting area that became a World Heritage Site in 1985, is one of Asia’s notable wetland reserves. Its shallow seasonal lakes attract cranes, storks and herons, together with wildfowl, waders, raptors and owls. A separate boat trip in Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary looks for Indian Skimmer and Black-bellied Tern, alongside Mugger and Gharial; Gangetic River Dolphin is possible but requires luck.
After a cultural stop at the Taj Mahal, the route visits Haiderpur’s wetlands and grasslands before reaching Pilibhit. Two days of morning and afternoon safaris provide opportunities for Tiger, with Leopard and Sloth Bear also possible. Swamp Deer and Hog Deer use the open areas. Birding spans forest, grassland, raptor and vulture communities, including searches for difficult species that have been recorded in recent years, such as Jerdon’s Bushchat and Bengal Florican.
The final part climbs toward Pangot near Nainital, where oak, pine and rhododendron forest supports Grey-crowned Prinia and Upland Pipit, as well as Bearded Vulture and the Cheer or Koklass Pheasants. Nearby Sattal adds freshwater lakes, wooded hills and further Himalayan species. The tour returns to Delhi on Day 14, with departure or an optional Central India Tigers extension on Day 15. Current dates, exact arrangements, accommodation and final price are confirmed through the BirdWatch inquiry process.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Delhi
On arrival in Delhi, travelers are met and transferred to the hotel. If the schedule allows, local birding can be arranged, most likely at Okhla Bird Sanctuary on the Yamuna River. Despite the surrounding urban pressure, the site may produce resident Striated Grassbird and Striated Babbler, while White-tailed Stonechat is another possibility.
Day 2
Delhi to Bharatpur via Sultanpur
After breakfast, the planned 07:30 departure from Delhi reaches Sultanpur National Park in about an hour. The morning is devoted to birding there before continuing to Bharatpur in the early afternoon. Arrival, hotel check-in, dinner and the overnight stay are scheduled for the evening.
Day 3
Bharatpur
A full day is spent in Keoladeo National Park, widely known as Bharatpur. Once used for large-scale hunting, the park became a World Heritage Site in 1985. When monsoon water replenishes the shallow lakes, the wetland draws cranes, storks, herons and wildfowl, with waders, raptors and owls also present. A day in the park may produce around 150 bird species. The plan is likely to remain inside through lunch, with a hot meal delivered so birding can continue.
Day 4
National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary
The day travels south from Bharatpur to Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary. A riverboat outing offers opportunities for Indian Skimmer and Black-bellied Tern, as well as Mugger crocodiles and fish-eating Gharial. Gangetic River Dolphin is possible, although seeing one requires luck.
Day 5
Bharatpur to Noida via Agra and Taj Mahal
Morning birding takes place in the predominantly agricultural country around Bharatpur rather than inside the park. The route then visits the Taj Mahal at Agra before continuing through the Delhi area to Noida.
Day 6
Noida to Haiderpur to Pilibhit Tiger Reserve
An early start leads to Haiderpur, a wetland with extensive grassland that complements the habitats visited at Bharatpur. Possible additions include Black-breasted and Streaked Weavers, Yellow-bellied Prinia, Indian and Striated Grassbirds, Striated Babbler, White-tailed Stonechat and Moustached Warbler. After the morning session, the drive continues to Pilibhit.
Day 7
Pilibhit
Days 7–8 are dedicated to Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, with morning and afternoon safaris on both days. Tiger is a major possibility rather than a guarantee; Leopard and Sloth Bear may also occur, while Swamp Deer and Hog Deer use open areas. The forest and grassland bird community includes Chestnut-capped Babbler, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo and Black-hooded Oriole, along with Rufous Turtle-Dove and Red Junglefowl. Raptors and vultures should also be represented. Especially difficult possibilities recorded in recent years include Jerdon’s Bushchat and Bengal Florican. Further hoped-for birds range from West Himalayan Bush Warbler, Hodgson’s Bushchat and Golden-headed Cisticola to Grey-headed Lapwing, Great Hornbill, Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl, Pied Harrier and Swamp Francolin.
Day 9
Pilibhit to Pangot, Nainital
After a morning birding session outside Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, the journey continues toward Pangot. Birding stops can be made during the drive, with arrival in the Himalayan foothills planned for the evening.
Day 10
Pangot
Days 10–11 explore Pangot, a small Uttarakhand hamlet near Nainital. The stay is at Jungle Lore, described as India’s first dedicated birding lodge. Oak, pine and rhododendron forests hold Grey-crowned Prinia and Upland Pipit, with Cheer and Koklass Pheasants also sought. Possibilities in the wider supporting cast include Blue-winged Minla, Rufous-bellied Niltava, Blue-capped Redstart and Himalayan Bluetail. Siberian Rubythroat, the Rufous-bellied and Himalayan Woodpeckers, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Mountain Hawk-Eagle and Bearded Vulture may also occur, together with White-throated and White-crested Laughingthrushes.
Day 12
Pangot to Sattal
Morning birding around Pangot precedes the drive to Sattal. A packed lunch allows roadside stops along the way, followed by further birding in the Sattal area for the rest of the day.
Day 13
Sattal
Sattal combines wooded green hills with freshwater lakes and offers a bird community broadly similar to Pangot, as well as good photographic opportunities. Possibilities include Lesser Yellownape, Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker and Red-billed Blue Magpie, plus Eurasian Griffon and Green-tailed Sunbird. Slaty-headed Parakeet and the Blue-throated or Golden-throated Barbets may also occur. Further searches cover Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher, Red-billed Leiothrix, Rufous-chinned Laughingthrush and Golden Bush-Robin.
Day 14
Sattal to Delhi
A final morning birding session at Sattal is followed by the return drive to Delhi.
Day 15
Depart, or join Central India Tigers extension
The standard plan includes breakfast and a transfer to Delhi airport, timed for the onward flight. Travelers may instead continue with the separate Central India Tigers extension visiting Kanha and Bandhavgarh.
