About this tour
Spend five days photographing birds in the lowland alluvial forests around Nimbokrang, west of Jayapura. The program starts with a road transfer from the Sentani area, using birding stops along the way before settling into a local base close to the forest. Three full field days provide time for repeated visits to productive trails and display areas rather than a rushed single pass.
Nimbokrang is known for a broad lowland assemblage that includes birds of paradise, kingfishers, parrots, pigeons and forest-edge species. Stated possibilities include Twelve-wired, King and Lesser birds-of-paradise, Pale-billed Sicklebill, Victoria Crowned-Pigeon and several kingfishers. Some species are difficult, seasonal or more often heard than seen, so these remain photographic targets rather than promises.
The experience combines vehicle access with walking on forest tracks and, when conditions require it, muddier sections near swamp forest. Rubber boots or suitable trekking footwear are advisable. The final day allows morning birding before returning toward Sentani or Jayapura. Travel by road from the Sentani or Jayapura area toward Nimbokrang, stopping for birds where conditions allow. Settle into the local base and use the remaining light for an introductory session near the forest edge.
Spend a full day on lowland forest tracks, selecting sites for current activity and photography conditions. The broad target set includes birds of paradise, kingfishers, parrots, pigeons and forest-edge species.
Return to productive trails and display areas with an early start. Repeated visits improve the opportunity to work patiently with difficult species without treating any target as guaranteed.
Use a third full day for targets missed earlier and for alternative lowland or swamp-forest sites when access permits. The route is adjusted for weather, trail conditions and bird activity.
Complete a final morning session before the road transfer back toward Sentani or Jayapura. Flight or hotel timing is confirmed with the final itinerary.
