10 Days Kenya Birding and Wildlife: Mara, Victoria and Kakamega
Link Nairobi and the Masai Mara with papyrus birding on Lake Victoria, two days in Kakamega Forest and Lake Nakuru’s lakeshore, woodland and rocky habitats.
About this tour
The western half of Kenya gives this ten-day itinerary its shape. After a full day in Nairobi National Park, the journey moves into the Masai Mara for open-country birding and wildlife photography. Two full Mara days leave time for early and late light, raptors over the plains and birding around the river.
Lake Victoria marks a clear change of habitat. A boat outing from Kisumu explores papyrus-fringed shores for species such as Papyrus Gonolek and Greater Swamp Warbler. Kakamega follows, with two days among forest birds and primates under the guidance of a local specialist. Turner’s Eremomela, Great Blue Turaco and Green-throated Sunbird are among the species sought here.
The return toward Nairobi runs through Lake Nakuru. Its lake margins, acacia woodland and rocky viewpoints broaden the habitat range once more, offering waterbirds, raptors and cliff-associated species. A full park day follows the arrival afternoon, before a final morning birding session and the drive back to the capital.
Photography is woven into the birding and game drives, with sunrise and sunset sessions in the Mara and opportunities to observe birds from the water at Lake Victoria. The itinerary uses Hotel Troy, AA Lodge Masai Mara, Sunset Hotel Kisumu, Rondo Retreat Centre and Lake Nakuru Lodge. Travel days range from short inter-site moves to drives of around six hours; the daily outline separates these from full exploration days. Bird numbers, migration activity and individual wildlife encounters depend on season and local conditions.

Itinerary
Day 1
Nairobi National Park’s habitat mosaic
Start with a 6 a.m. pickup for a full park day, exploring grassland, wetland and highland forest habitat. Search for Secretarybird, Kori Bustard, Jackson’s Widowbird and other birds while watching for rhino, giraffe and big cats. The city skyline adds a distinctive setting for photography. Dinner and briefing are at Hotel Troy Nairobi.
Day 2
Morning birding and the road to the Mara
Bird in Nairobi during the early light before traveling toward the Masai Mara through the Rift Valley. Allow about five hours for the approximately 250-kilometer journey. An evening drive begins the search for Southern Ground Hornbill, Usambiro Barbet, Bateleur and other savanna birds. Stay at AA Lodge Masai Mara.
Day 3
Days 3–4: Mara plains and river birding
Devote two full days to game drives, with photography sessions around sunrise and sunset. Look for Lilac-breasted Roller, Double-banded Courser and Rosy-breasted Longclaw, and explore the Mara River area for water-associated birds and wildlife. Cheetah, spotted hyena, hippo and crocodile are among the possible mammal and reptile encounters. Both nights are at AA Lodge; migration activity varies by season.
Day 5
From the Mara to Lake Victoria’s papyrus
Take a sunrise drive before the roughly six-hour, 280-kilometer transfer to Kisumu. An afternoon boat trip follows the papyrus shore, searching for Papyrus Gonolek, Greater Swamp Warbler, Carruthers’s Cisticola and Pied Kingfisher. Look also for otters and monkeys along the banks. Overnight at Sunset Hotel Kisumu.
Day 6
Days 6–7: Kakamega with a local forest guide
Travel about 50 kilometers, roughly one and a half hours, to Kakamega and spend two days exploring with a local guide. Focus on forest birds including Great Blue Turaco, Turner’s Eremomela, Yellow-bellied Wattle-eye and Green-throated Sunbird. Colobus and red-tailed monkeys add interest to the canopy walks. Rondo Retreat Centre is the base for both nights.
Day 8
Final forest birding and arrival at Nakuru
Finish birding in Kakamega before the approximately four-hour, 180-kilometer journey toward Nakuru. Explore the lodge surroundings and lake margins in the afternoon, looking for pelicans, flamingos, grebes and African Spoonbill as conditions allow. Watch for rhinos and giraffes in the park. Stay at Lake Nakuru Lodge.
Day 9
Lake margins, woodland and Baboon Cliff
Use a full day to explore Nakuru’s range of habitats, including acacia woodland and rocky areas around Baboon Cliff. Search for Mocking Cliff Chat, White-fronted Bee-eater, Grey-crested Helmetshrike and raptors. Mammal watching continues alongside the birding, with waterbuck, bushbuck and baboons among the possibilities. Return to Lake Nakuru Lodge.
Day 10
Rift Valley viewpoints and Nairobi departure
Enjoy a final short birding session before the roughly three-hour, 160-kilometer return drive. Stops at Rift Valley viewpoints offer landscape photography and chances for birds such as Augur Buzzard and Long-tailed Widowbird. A craft-market visit or farewell lunch may fit before the transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
