Kenya’s Castle Forest, Samburu National Reserve, Lake Nakuru, and the legendary Kakamega Forest. Designed for passionate birders and wildlife enthusiasts, this journey blends iconic African mammals with spectacular birdlife across montane, savannah, and tropical rainforest habitats. From rhinos and big cats in Nairobi, to the dry-country specialties of Samburu, to flamingos at Lake Nakuru and forest endemics in Kakamega, each day brings a new photographic and birding opportunity. Begin with an early breakfast and enter Nairobi National Park for a morning of birding and mammal viewing. Expect rhinos, gazelles, hartebeest, eagles, storks, and more.
After lunch at Galleria Mall, drive to Castle Forest with birding en route if time allows.
Overnight: Castle Forest Lodge
Morning birding along the forest road targeting sunbirds, montane species, and monkeys.
Drive to Nanyuki for lunch, then continue to Samburu, birding from the entrance gate.
Key species include Vulturine Guineafowl, Kori Bustard, Pygmy Falcon, and various eagles.
Overnight: Samburu Simba Lodge
A full day exploring Samburu’s dryland ecosystem. Look out for Golden Pipit, Buff-crested Bustard, Somali Bee-eater, Wahlberg’s Eagle, Kori Bustard, Taita Fiscal, and more.
Mammals include Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy Zebra, and possibly Caracal.
Overnight: Samburu Simba Lodge
Morning birding and game viewing followed by midday rest.
Late afternoon drive for additional sightings including sunbirds, raptors, bustards, and dryland specialties.
Overnight: Samburu Simba Lodge
Early game drive, then depart for Lake Nakuru.
Lunch en route or upon arrival depending on timing.
Evening session around the lake for flamingos, pelicans, ducks, sandpipers, buffalos, rhinos, and possibly lions.
Overnight: Lake Nakuru Lodge
Morning breakfast and departure to Kakamega Forest, arriving for late lunch or dinner.
Birding begins immediately around the trails: Great Blue Turaco, Hornbills, Greenbuls, Flycatchers, and forest monkeys.
Overnight: Rondo Retreat
Morning walk from the lodge targeting forest specialties such as Dusky Crested Flycatcher, Turner’s Eremomela, Oriole Finch, Grey-chested Babbler, Turacos, and Woodpeckers.
Return for lunch, then relax until the afternoon session.
Overnight: Rondo Retreat
Final morning birding until about 10 AM.
Return to the lodge, check out, and transfer back to Nairobi by road or depart from Eldoret Airport.
