About this tour

This ten-day, nine-night itinerary is built around patient bird and wildlife photography at a relaxed pace. Each photographer is assigned a window seat in an open-sided four-wheel-drive safari Land Cruiser, helping the small group work with light, position and subject behavior.

The route connects Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Samburu, Meru National Park, Imenti Forest and Ol Pejeta Conservancy. It combines savanna predators and migration landscapes with lakeshore birds, northern Kenya specialties, riverine forest and conservation-focused wildlife viewing beneath Mount Kenya.

The program suits nature lovers and photographers at any skill level. Drives and stops remain flexible around wildlife, light and road conditions, while migration events and all bird or mammal sightings are possibilities rather than guarantees. The final day is reserved for the return to the airport and pre-flight rest.

Itinerary
Day 1
NAIROBI- MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE

Leave the Nairobi hotel early for the approximately 265-kilometer, five-hour drive to Maasai Mara, pausing at a Great Rift Valley viewpoint. Arrive for lunch, then take an afternoon photography drive for birds, plains game and predators.

Day 2
MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RSERVE

Spend a full day photographing across the Maasai Mara with a picnic lunch, working tree-dotted grassland, rolling hills and the Mara River area. Wildebeest and zebra migration activity is most associated with July to October, but crossings and wildlife behavior are never guaranteed.

Day 3
MAASAI MARA-LAKE NAKURU

Travel to Lake Nakuru National Park for lakeshore, grassland and acacia-woodland photography. Look for flamingos and other birds as well as rhinos and predators, using designated viewpoints where leaving the vehicle is permitted.

Day 4
LAKE NAKURU- SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE

Depart for Samburu National Reserve, stopping in Nyahururu to photograph the 74-meter Thomson’s Falls on the Ewaso Ng’iro River. Continue to Samburu for lunch at the lodge.

Day 5
SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE

Take an early photography drive along Samburu’s Ewaso Nyiro River. Work with northern species such as Reticulated Giraffe, Vulturine Guineafowl, Somali Ostrich and Gerenuk, alongside river and mountain landscapes.

Day 6
SAMBURU- MERU NATIONAL PARK

Make a final slow Samburu drive on the way to the gate, then travel through Isiolo to Meru National Park. Lunch follows arrival and check-in at Ikweta Safari Camp, with a short Meru drive planned for the afternoon.

Day 7
MERU NATIONAL PARK

Spend the full day in Meru, photographing birds and wildlife among open plains, woodland, riverine forest and swamp habitat. Fourteen rivers and mountain-fed streams shape the park, which has more than 300 recorded bird species.

Day 8
MERU NATIONAL PARK- OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY

Drive toward Ol Pejeta Conservancy, allowing one to two hours and making a birding stop in Imenti Forest. After lunch at Sweetwaters Tented Camp, take a late-afternoon game drive around Ol Pejeta.

Day 9
OL-PEJETA CONSERVANCY

Explore Ol Pejeta for rhinos, chimpanzees, predators, savanna birds and Mount Kenya landscapes. Wildlife viewing is possible year-round, with June to October identified as a particularly favorable period.

Day 10
OL-PEJETA CONSERVANCY- NAIROBI

Check out after breakfast and return toward the airport with lunch en route, aiming to arrive in mid-afternoon. A day room at an airport hotel is included for rest and freshening up before the international flight.
