3 Day-Amboseli-National-Park-birding
A three-day private birding tour combining Amboseli’s wetlands and savanna with the montane forest of Oloitoktok beneath Mount Kilimanjaro.
About this tour
This three-day route explores contrasting habitats around Amboseli National Park and the Mount Kilimanjaro foothills. Arid plains and seasonal lakebeds sit beside spring-fed marshes, supporting dry-country birds, waterbirds and large mammals against the mountain backdrop.
Most birding inside Amboseli is from the safari vehicle, with alighting limited to designated areas. Golden-breasted Starling and Black-headed Lapwing are regional possibilities alongside Temminck’s Courser and Pygmy Falcon, while elephants and other mammals frequently use the wetlands. Dust and heat are common in the drier periods from June to October and January to February.
The final morning shifts to Oloitoktok’s montane forest near the Kenya–Tanzania border. Bar-throated Apalis, Kilimanjaro and Mbulu White-eyes, Hartlaub’s Turaco and other forest birds are among the targets before the return to Nairobi. Every sighting and the precise stop sequence depend on weather, access and current activity.

Leave Nairobi early and travel southeast toward Amboseli via Iremito Gate. Use the access road for strategic birding stops targeting arid and savanna species, then continue to the lodge for lunch and an afternoon drive inside the park, watching the wetlands for birds and elephants.
Spend a full day birding Amboseli’s open grassland, seasonal lakebeds and spring-fed marshes with Mount Kilimanjaro in view when weather permits. Explore mainly by vehicle, pausing at productive wetland and savanna areas for regional birds and wildlife.
After an early breakfast, walk in the Oloitoktok montane forest on the Kilimanjaro foothills for Bar-throated Apalis, white-eyes, turacos and other forest specialists. Allow roughly two to three hours in the forest before beginning the drive back to Nairobi.
