3 Day-Amboseli-National-Park-birding

Our 3-day birding tour begins with an early departure from Nairobi , traveling southeast toward the legendary Amboseli National Park . We will approach the park via the Iremito Gate, taking full advantage of the access road—a recognized birding hotspot that frequently yields rewarding sightings before we even cross the park boundary. We shall make several strategic stops along this stretch to scout for regional specialties. This area is particularly known for a diverse mix of arid and savanna species; We shall be on the lookout for interesting sightings such as the Pygmy Falcon, Temminck’s Courser, Black-headed Lapwing , and the striking Golden-breasted Starling . Other species we hope to encounter include the Be on the lookout , Red-fronted Prinia, Ashy Cisticola, Capped Wheatear, Gorgeous Sunbird, Red-billed Buffalo Weaver, Rufous Chatterer, Cut-throat, Black-faced Waxbill, Banded Parisoma , African Penduline Tit , Pygmy Batis, Somali Bunting, Vitelline Masked Weaver, Straw-tailed Whydah, Grey Wren-Warbler, Taita Fiscal, Pink-breasted Lark , and the Lesser Masked Weaver . If we are fortunate, we may also spot the elegant Golden Pipit amongst the scrub. Upon arrival at our lodge, we will enjoy lunch before heading out for an afternoon birding session inside the park. Amboseli is one of Kenya’s top birding destinations, hosting a wide variety of species along with spectacular wildlife. Be sure to watch for the large herds of Savannah Elephants feeding in the swamps—an iconic Amboseli scene.

Today combines world-class birding with breathtaking scenery in Amboseli National Park. With Mount Kilimanjaro as our constant backdrop, we will scan the landscape for regional specials while admiring the mountain’s iconic volcanic peaks: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Expect a day of rich sightings set against Africa’s most dramatic geological stage. Beyond the spectacle, we are exploring a vital ecological landscape. Amboseli serves as the heartbeat of a vast network of corridors, linking the park to the surrounding group ranches, the Chyulu Hills , and the expansive wilderness of Tsavo West National Park and Kilimanjaro West in Tanzania. It’s a rare chance to witness East Africa’s diverse avian life in the shadow of its greatest geological wonder, within an ecosystem that remains remarkably connected. Amboseli’s diverse habitats, from open grasslands to marshes fed by underground springs, create a haven for both birds and wildlife. The marshes attract large numbers of animals, including the Savannah Elephants, Hippopotamus, Common Ringed Waterbucks, Wildebeests , Burchell’s Zebras, Bohor Reedbucks, Cape Buffalo, Spotted Hyenas , and numerous waterbirds. Birding here offers spectacular opportunities, enhanced by the dramatic backdrop of Kilimanjaro.

We begin our final day with an early breakfast before heading to the lush, montane forest of Oloitoktok. Situated spectacularly in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, right along the Kenya-Tanzania border, this destination offers a breathtaking change of scenery. We will spend our morning looking for a host of specialized forest residents. Our target list is extensive, featuring the range-restricted Bar-throated Apalis, Mbulu and Kilimanjaro White-eyes, and the dazzling Emerald Cuckoo. Keep your binoculars ready for the Purple Roller, Augur Buzzard, Yellow Bishop, Yellow-crowned Canary, African Green Pigeon, Red-chested Cuckoo, Singing Cisticola, African Harrier-Hawk , and the migratory Tree Pipit . Among our other key avian targets are the Moustached Tinkerbird , the melodious Olive- headed Greenbul, the spirited Southern Citril , the splendid Hartlaub’s Turaco, and the distinctive African Hill Babbler . We will also be on the lookout for the unique Hildebrandt’s Spurfowl and the Rüppell’s Robin-Chat. Beyond the birdlife, keep an eye on the canopy for the Zanj Sun Squirrel and Mount Kilimanjaro Guereza feeding in the treetops. After this rewarding 2–3 hour forest walk, we will begin our drive back to Nairobi, ensuring you arrive in time for your onward flight home.” Ruma National Park is a hidden birding gem for nature lovers, birdwatchers, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts, offering a rich diversity of species and some of Kenya’s most picturesque scenery. This delightful birding hotspot boasts a sensational mix of habitats, making it one of the country’s finest birding destinations. It is the best place to spot the rare Montane Blue Swallow and the iconic Roan Antelope, alongside a wide variety of other species. Thanks to its mild climate and natural landscapes, birdwatching in Ruma is productive throughout the year. For an even more rewarding experience, a visit to Ruma can be seamlessly combined with nearby birding treasures such as Lake Victoria , Busia Grasslands, Mount Elgon, Kongelai Escarpment , and Kakamega Forest , forming part of Kenya’s western birding circuit.
