About this tour

Irangi Forest occupies the eastern side of the Mount Kenya forest expanse, within Kenya’s largest remaining indigenous forest block. It contributes to the catchments of two major river systems, the Tana and Ewaso Nyiro, and is recognized as a Key Biodiversity Area for its ecological and species diversity.

Birding is conducted on foot along nature trails inside the forest. The combination of highland woodland, dense vegetation and water-catchment habitat makes this a focused forest outing, with the guide choosing trails according to access, weather and current bird activity. Specific birds remain possibilities rather than guaranteed sightings.

Notable mammals include Eastern Mountain Bongo and Black-fronted Duiker, alongside Elephant, Giant Forest Hog and Leopard. Another distinctive inhabitant is the Irangi Frog, a Kenyan endemic known only from Irangi and Kimandi on the southeastern slopes of Aberdare National Park. Wildlife encounters depend on conditions and are secondary to the birding focus.
