About this tour
Kongelai Escarpment, locally known as Kanyarkwat Escarpment, lies outside Kapenguria on Kenya’s western birding circuit. More than 200 bird species have been recorded across the area, including localized and conservation-priority birds.
The landscape is a mosaic rather than a single forest block. Upland forest remnants around Kapenguria and Kapcherop alternate with farmland, where mature fig trees attract barbets, starlings and other fruit-eating birds. The guide selects stops according to current activity and access.
Kongelai can also fit into a broader western route with Mount Elgon, Saiwa Swamp, Lake Victoria, Busia Grasslands, Ruma National Park, Mount Mtelo and the Cherangani Hills.
