About this tour
Lake Baringo lies at about 1,000 meters in Kenya’s eastern Rift Valley. The freshwater lake covers roughly 130 square kilometers and receives drainage from a basin of about 6,820 square kilometers. The Laikipia Escarpment rises to the east and the Tugen Hills to the west, while seasonal and perennial rivers sustain the lake despite high evaporation.
The bird list for Baringo exceeds 400 recorded species, and a productive day can yield a very high total, although no number is promised. Possibilities span waterbirds, raptors, owls and dry-country specialties, including African Skimmer, Senegal Thick-knee, Jackson’s Hornbill, Northern White-faced Owl, Somali Tit and Northern Crombec.
Birding is possible throughout the year, with early morning and late afternoon generally favored because daytime temperatures can be high. The outing concentrates on accessible lakeshore and surrounding habitat, adapting the sequence to heat, water level and current activity. Crocodiles and freshwater fish are also part of the lake ecosystem, but wildlife behavior should never be assumed predictable.
