About this tour
Lake Bogoria lies in Kenya’s Rift Valley and is known for both geothermal activity and major concentrations of Lesser Flamingos. Geysers and hot springs punctuate the lakeshore, while blue-green algae provide feeding conditions for flamingos that also use freshwater inflows around the lake.
More than 350 bird species have been recorded in the national reserve. In addition to Lesser and Greater Flamingos, possibilities include Black-necked Grebe, African Fish Eagle, Cape Teal, Black-winged Stilt, Little Stint, Woodland Kingfisher and several dry-country species. Birding is possible throughout the year, with November to April identified as a particularly favorable period, but numbers and sightings always vary.
Bogoria forms part of the Kenya Lake System UNESCO World Heritage property together with Lakes Nakuru and Elementeita. It is also culturally important to the Endorois people, whose connection with the lake spans centuries. The day balances lakeshore birding with observation of the geothermal landscape, following current access and safety conditions.
