About this tour

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater Rift Valley lake just over two hours northwest of Nairobi. At 1,884 meters above sea level, it is the highest of Kenya’s Rift Valley lakes. The lake covers about 139 square kilometers, reaches nearly 13 kilometers across and is generally shallow, with an average depth around five meters.

Birding combines a boat ride with walking along accessible shoreline. Papyrus margins, open water and yellow-barked acacias support more than 400 recorded bird species. African Fish Eagle is a characteristic sight; other possibilities include Grey-crested Helmetshrike, Scaly-throated Honeyguide, Pearl-spotted Owlet and many waterbirds.

Naivasha has been a Ramsar wetland of international importance since 1995. The Malewa and Gilgil rivers feed the lake from the Aberdare Range, while no surface outlet is visible. Hippo and several savanna mammals also occur around the lake. Boat use, walking areas and viewing conditions depend on weather, water level and current wildlife activity.
