About this tour
The Lake Turkana National Parks comprise Sibiloi, Central Island and South Island national parks, together covering 161,485 hectares within the much larger Turkana basin. The lake extends about 249 kilometers north to south, reaches 44 kilometers at its widest point and is known as the Jade Sea for its color.
Turkana supports more than 85 waterbird species, including 35 migrants, and serves as a passage and stopover site for Palearctic birds moving from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Fish-rich bays support Nile Crocodile, while the island parks provide breeding habitat for crocodiles, Hippopotamus and several snake species. All observations depend on the area visited and current conditions.
The wider landscape is also internationally important for its geology, fossils and archaeology. Koobi Fora and nearby deposits have yielded evidence from several human and pre-human species, while volcanic flows and petrified forest add to the stark desert setting. The precise birding area and access plan must reflect distance, weather, local logistics and park conditions.
